      • Where is the Smart Hub?

        Back to Questions
The S40 Smart Thermostat is one-piece architecture. There is no separate smart hub, as with the S30 design. The LCC is contained within the thermostat.
      • With the absence of a Smart Hub, how does the S40 establish a Wi-Fi connection?

        Back to Questions

The LCC is still part of the S40, it is now contained inside the thermostat. The Wi-Fi connection is established the same way that it did on the S30.

      • To ensure a reliable Wi-Fi connection, how close must the S40 be to the nearest Wi-Fi Access Point?

        Back to Questions

The S40 Thermostat should be within 25 feet of the nearest Wi-Fi Access Point. This distance will be directly affected by the environment (i.e., walls, glass, metal, other electronic devices, etc.)

      • Will the S40 require shielded cable?

        Back to Questions
Lennox recommends 18AWG unshielded thermostat cable. Keep thermostat cables at least one foot away from large electrical wiring used for motors, line starters, lighting ballasts and large distribution panels. Failure to follow these wiring practices may introduce electrical interference (noise) which can cause erratic system operation. All unused thermostat wire should be grounded to the indoor unit chassis only.

NOTE: Shielded cable may be required if the above wiring guidelines cannot be met.
      • Is the S40 powered by an AC or DC power source?

        Back to Questions

The S40 is powered by 24 Volts AC.

      • Will I have 24 volts present at the sub-base?

      • Will the S40 have the ability to connect to the zone sensors wirelessly?

        Back to Questions

Currently Lennox does not offer a wireless zone controller. You may continue to utilize the Lennox Smart Zoning System (formerly known as iHarmony).

      • Can I hide the S40 Smart Thermostat in a closet and use the Smart Room Sensor as primary thermostat?

        Back to Questions
No, we do not recommend you hide your S40 Smart Thermostat in a closet. The Smart Room Sensor is a battery powered device that can be placed in less-than-ideal areas. If the temperature difference between the Smart Room Sensor and the S40 is outside a 2–10-degree range (default 7 degree), the system will disregard the data from the Smart Room Sensor and rely on the S40. For this reason, the S40 must still be able to monitor the temperature of the general living space. If the S40 is in a closet buried behind coats, it would be hard for the S40 to accurately monitor the dwelling spaces temperature.
      • How is the ERV/HRV connected to the system?

        Back to Questions

An ERV/HRV or Fresh Air Damper is connected to the S40 with the enhanced Equipment Interface Module (Cat# 22X18).

      • Will the S40 display the wireless signal strength to connected wireless devices?

        Back to Questions

The S40 will display whether the signal strength is good, fair, poor or if it has a connection issue. If the signal strength is poor or if there is a connection issue it will display a message and provide the recommendation to move the sensor to a better location or to call the dealer to add a Wireless Extender.

      • Will the Dealer have the ability to view alerts (error codes) on a consumer's thermostat, even if the consumer has not granted the Dealer permission to access their S40?

        Back to Questions
No. The dealer will not be able to view alerts if the homeowner has not granted permission.

To set up advanced diagnostics and alerts, there is a two-step process.

First step is that you MUST enter your dealer ID to connect that S40 to your dealer account.

Second step is for the homeowner to turn on the three permissions for advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting, remote sharing and alerts and notification. If they have not turned on these permissions, you will not have the ability to view their alerts.
      • Where is the modes/schedule button?

      • What are the individual pollutants measured and how will they affect the IAQ score?

        Back to Questions

PM2.5 - PM stands for particulate matter (also called particle pollution), the term for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air you can breathe. 2.5 is a measurement for the fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller. Breathable air particles can include: pet dander, bacteria, mold, chemicals from cleaning products, building materials, fuel-burning equipment such as furnaces, upholstered goods, cooking, sweeping, copy machines, skin flakes, clothing fibers, combustion, cooking, smoke, dust, dirt, spores, pollen. Sources vary seasonally.

CO2 – (also known as carbon dioxide) is an odorless, colorless, non-flammable gas. CO2 is a byproduct of combustion, as well as a result of the metabolic process in living organisms (for example, you remove it from your body via the lungs in exhaled air).

VOC – (also known as volatile organic compounds or chemicals) are a combination of gases and odors released/emitted/off-gassed from a variety of sources. VOC include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Alternate terms: odors, gases, vapors, or chemicals.

      • What will affect the indoor air quality score the most?

        Back to Questions

The Lennox Smart Room Sensor helps you dial in a more perfect environment by providing accurate temperature and humidity readings to the S40 Smart Thermostat and telling it how to balance temperatures across the rooms where the sensor is placed.

The Lennox Smart Room Sensor isn't just about perfectly balanced comfort; it can also help you save energy. When a room is in use, occupancy sensors keep your set temperature. When it's not, the sensors revert to a more energy efficient temperature.

      • How does the logic for the Smart Room Sensor work?

        Back to Questions

The Smart Room Sensors will work with the S40 Smart Thermostat to average the temperature between them and use that average as system temperature. For example, the S40 reads 72 degrees while one Smart Room Sensor in the office reads 76 and another Smart Room Sensor in the living room reads 70 degrees. It will take an average of the 3 temperatures and in this specific example, it is 73 degrees. The S40 will compare your set point to the average and run your system to meet the call for heating or cooling. That means that while The S40 will try to satisfy the temperature set point where the sensor is placed, another room may become hotter or colder.

      • What is Sensor Temperature Difference Limit?

        Back to Questions

This setting determines the temperature differential limit between the smart room sensor and the S40 thermostat. Set default temperature difference is 7ºF. The system compares the smart room sensor and thermostat temperature difference. If the temperature difference between the smart room and thermostat temperatures is greater than 7ºF then the system determines there is a potential issue with smart room sensor temperature. The system will then raise a warning on the thermostat and will only use the thermostat temperature reading and ignore the smart room sensor reading until the issue is resolved.

You can change the sensor temperature difference limit setting to a range between 2 to 10ºF and can be incremented 1 degree at a time.

      • What information is the Smart Room Sensor collecting?

        Back to Questions

      • What types of challenges was the sensor designed to overcome, i.e., rooms with little airflow, etc.?

        Back to Questions

Important Notice: The Lennox Smart Room Sensor is not a zoning product and will not solve problems related to HVAC system and home deficiencies including, but not limited to, poor duct work condition and design, incorrect equipment sizing, and/or home insulation and points of air leakage/penetration. What it can do is balance temperatures in various rooms by averaging the temperature between rooms where the sensor is placed and the S40.

Challenges that the sensor can overcome is achieving consistent comfort across several rooms tied to an HVAC system. If a particular room is located on the other end of a floorplan where an S40 presides, then the air in that room may not reach a comfortable temperature when the S40 has reached setpoint. The smart room sensor will mitigate this by driving a longer run cycle on the HVAC system until the system has reached a balanced setpoint between the smart room sensor and the S40.
